2022 Victoria Dragon Boat Race Information
Paddles up! Race in one of the most beautiful venues in Canada – the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival.
Nestled in the heart of downtown Victoria, the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival takes place against the backdrop of the landmark Empress Hotel and the BC Provincial Legislature, only minutes’ walk from shopping districts, hotels and ferries to the US. Get on stage for the Paddlers’ Air Band Contest on Saturday night, hang a paper lantern to support the BC Cancer Foundation, and check out some of the great bands performing on our two stages. With up to 80,000 visitors checking out the races from our grandstands, the Festival is one of the most lively and vibrant events on the calendar.
Teams that race in Victoria include a blend of local and out-of-town teams. Teams regularly attend from Victoria, Nanaimo, Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland. The Victoria Dragon Boat Festival hosts competitive and recreational teams alike.
The Victoria Dragon Boat Festival is a Dragon Boat Canada Qualifying Regatta. Indicate if your team is attempting to qualify when you register to compete.
- Mixed Division
- Women’s Division
Mixed Division : Mixed boats are lots of fun, mainly because they are a mix of men and women with a maximum of 10 men.
Women’s Division: All paddlers must be female. The drummer and stern may be male, unless the team intends to qualify for Dragon Boat Canada Club/Nationals, in which case the stern must be female.
- Great Grand Dragon Challenge
- Corporate Team Challenge
- Breast Cancer Survivors’ Challenge
Please Note: for Challenge Races, participation will be limited to the fastest crews in each category. If a fee is paid and your team does not qualify, a full refund for each applicable race will be made after the event.
The actual races that will be run will be affected by the number of team registrations which are hard to predict with the number of returning teams to all festivals being affected from the pandemic.
Breast Cancer Survivors’ Challenge
All paddlers must be breast cancer survivors regardless of gender. The drummer and stern are not required to be breast cancer survivors and may be of either gender. Teams including cancer supporters are welcome to participate in the Carnation Toss and Paddle Arch, but are considered ineligible to win the Breast Cancer Survivors’ Challenge Cup.
Great Grand Dragon (Senior C) Challenge
These teams are our most seasoned, which means all team members must be at least 59 or older on June 1st of the year in question! The drummer and stern can be any age. The Great Grand Dragon Challenge features the top 5 fastest teams from the first 2 races regardless of division. This means there could be both Mixed and Womens teams could be competing in the Great Grand Dragon Challenge. Gender restrictions are in effect (maximum 10 males).
Fifty per cent of the paddlers must share their place of employment and accordingly mixed division gender restrictions are in effect.
There will be gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded to the first, second, and third place teams respectively from the A finals. There will be pins for the first, second, and third place teams from the B consolation finals. Medals and pins can be picked up from the BC Cancer Foundation tent following the finals. Instead of an awards ceremony on stage, teams are invited to pick up their awards at their leisure and get their picture taken in front of our VDBF banner.
